a non-toxic, organic mattress out in nature

A good night’s sleep is something to cherish, especially with how demanding our lives can be. For many years, I never thought about the mattress I slept on. I took the full-size mattress my parents purchased when I was seven years old to college and slept on it until I was about 25 (yeah, it wasn’t that comfortable). At that point, I had already made many eco-friendly and sustainable switches in my life, so when I went searching for a mattress, I knew it needed to align with my values.

Why choose an organic or non-toxic mattress?

Because we spend 1/3 of our lives in our beds! Why wouldn’t we want to make it a safe, non-toxic zone? When we get a little shut-eye, we shouldn’t have to compromise our health (or the planet’s). You don’t want to sleep on toxic materials grown or treated with pesticides. Most of these mattresses use certified organic materials, and all offer a toxic-free and healthy sleep experience.

What to Look for When Buying a new mattress:

When adding mattress brands to this list, we looked for eco-friendly materials and sustainable certifications.

Materials we like to see are:

  • Sustainably Sourced Wool – wool can be a wonderful, renewable material when it’s ethically and responsibly sourced. Sustainably sourced wool comes from farms that prioritize animal welfare, regenerative land management, and traceable supply chains. It’s naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and flame-resistant.
  • Organic Cotton – Farmers grow organic cotton without using toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or genetically modified seeds. It’s softer, safer, and far better for both farmers and the planet. When you see GOTS-certified organic cotton in a mattress, it means the manufacturer processed the fiber according to strict environmental and social standards.
  • Organic Rubber – Derived from the sap of rubber trees, organic rubber (often used in mattress cores) is a renewable, biodegradable alternative to synthetic foams. Workers tap and process certified organic rubber without harsh chemicals, supporting more sustainable forestry.
  • Natural Latex – Harvesters collect the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis tree to create natural latex, which offers breathable, responsive support. It’s naturally antimicrobial, resistant to dust mites and mold, and free from the petrochemicals used in synthetic foams. Look for GOLS or Rainforest Alliance certification for verified sustainability.

Certifications to look for include:

  • Rain Forest Alliance – Producers source materials like latex or rubber responsibly from forests that protect the environment, support biodiversity, and uphold fair labor practices.
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) – The leading certification for organic fibers like cotton or wool. GOTS verifies that every step (from harvest to finished fabric) meets rigorous organic and ethical standards.
  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) – Specifically for latex, GOLS guarantees that the latex is made from organically grown rubber trees and processed in facilities meeting environmental and social criteria.
  • GREENGUARD – Tests for low chemical emissions and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). A GREENGUARD-certified mattress helps ensure cleaner indoor air quality.
  • MADE SAFE® – Certification that screens products for ingredients known or suspected to harm human health, animals, or ecosystems, ensuring your mattress is truly free from toxic chemicals and safe.
  • OEKO-TEX – Verifies that textiles are tested and proven free from hundreds of harmful substances down to the tiniest trace levels.
  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council®) – Ensures that any wood, latex, or forest-based materials in a product come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.
  • CertiPUR-US® – Used for foam components, this certification ensures they’re made without formaldehyde, phthalates, ozone-depleting substances, or heavy metals, and have low VOC emissions.
  • Intertek Clean Air Certified – Another independent standard that tests mattresses and furniture for low chemical emissions, ensuring safer indoor air quality and healthier homes.

While certifications are not a be-all, end-all, they ensure higher ethical and sustainable standards are met, making conscious shopping easier for consumers.
