WHAT MAKES THESE GIFTS SO GREAT FOR ENVIRONMENTALISTS?
It’s important that before we add anything to these gift guides, we know the brands creating the products are doing their best to keep their carbon footprint low. We ask a series of questions for each product added to see if it fits the bill. They are as follows:
1) What is the gift made out of? The gift we add must be made from eco-friendly materials that are easy on the planet. 2) Who made the gift? The maker behind the item is just as important and should be compensated fairly for their time. 3) Does the brand implement sustainability within its entire business? We don’t want surface-level eco-friendly products; we want brands who genuinely care about sustainability and enforce it throughout their business wherever they can - from shipping to giving back. 4) Is the gift practical & something they can use for many years? We’ve all been given gifts we could have done without, but we find every gift we add to these lists are practical and going to be loved for a very long time.
When it comes to environmentalists' gifts, we want to make sure to only list the best materials - often recycled or organic - and gifts we know they can use for many years.
our favorite gifts for environmentalists:
1. Plantable Wildflower Seed Paper Insect Card Set by Small Victories
Price: $36.75
We absolutely love plantable paper here at Sustainably Chic! It's such a great way to honor the tradition of snail mail without all the waste of conventional cards. If you are unfamiliar with seed paper, these cards can be easily planted in 1/8" of soil in full to partial sun and grow wildflowers like bird's eye, clarkia, black-eyed Susan, sweet alyssum, catchfly, and snapdragon!
The perfect gift for any planet-loving friend! Small Victories, based out of Easthampton, MA, specializes in plantable seed cards, original illustrations, pronoun badges, and accessories. Plus, 10% of the profits are donated to LGBTQ+ and ecological organizations.
2. Organic Underwear by Subset
Price: $18-20
I love my Subset and undies and bralettes. This is a great gift idea for environmentalists because these undergarments are super comfortable and breathable (environmentalists have things to do!) but also feel feminine and stylish. Good for the wearer and the planet, these are made from eco-friendly materials like GOTS and OEKO-TEX-certified organic cotton, TENCEL, and recycled nylon. Not only that, but they’re also Fair Trade Certified, which means everyone involved in the supply chain was treated fairly.
3. Wearwell Membership
Wearwell is a curated marketplace, membership, and styling service that would be a perfect gift for the environmentalist in your life who also loves fashion. You can choose your gift card amount or gift a one-year membership to wearwell (for $96).
Then, your loved one can cash in their gift card for clothing, accessories, home goods, or a membership and get 10% off every order, free shipping and returns, access to stylists who can help them decide on what looks are best for them, and more perks.
4. Gift Card to Getaway
Give the gift of rest, rejuvenation, and free time to your friends and family this year. Getaway’s cozy cabins provide restorative stays in nature where your loved ones can take a break from work, wifi, and routines. Their gift cards are redeemable across all locations, and are a perfect gift for those people who prefer experiences to things, are hard to shop for, enjoy the outdoors, or just deserve a little retreat from their busy life. (It’s also a great option for those who live far away from you because you can deliver the gift card right to their inbox!)
5. Hemp Towel Set
Price: $60
Hemp is a sustainable natural fiber that doesn’t require the usage of insecticides or pesticides to grow and doesn’t need as much water as cotton. It’s also naturally biostatic, quick-drying, and durable… That’s why I LOVE these hemp towels! This set from Anact (which comes with a bath towel, hand towel, and washcloth) would be a great gift idea for the new parent or homeowner, college student, or Airbnb host. These towels are made from 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton and are super soft, absorbent, and fast-drying.
6. Socks that Protect Rainforests
Price: $32
Conscious Step’s entire supply chain is GOTS and Vegan certified.
With each Conscious Step purchase, a portion of proceeds are donated to the charity associated with that pair of socks. From saving the ocean to planting trees, there is a cause any environmentalists can attach themselves to.
7. Biodegradable Phone Case
Price: $36-60
These sustainable phone cases are soft to the touch and flexible, and they have a grippy texture to prevent you from dropping them. Some cases feature a built-in cardholder, making them even more practical for daily use. Pela cases are made of Flaxstic®, which is a combination of flax straw materials and compostable bioplastic elastomer. They are also 100% safe for your health because they are tested to be free of phthalates, BPA, lead and cadmium.
8. Eco-Friendly Hat by Tentree
Price: $25-50
A hat that plants trees!
Every item you buy at TenTree plants 10 trees (hence the name) as part of their target to plant 1 billion trees by 2030.
Their hats are also a great price, and they have styles for both men and women.
From festival hats like this one pictured to your basic ball cap, there is something for everyone.
9. Jonote Three Tier Basket
Price: $150
Natural fibers are always a favorite here on Sustainably Chic, and when we saw this beautiful tier basket, we knew it would be perfect for this gift guide. The Jonote Three-Tier Basket will look lovely in a kitchen with fruits and onions or the bathroom holding extra toiletries. It is handmade by artisans in the Cuetzalan region of Puebla by bending a flexible wood and then weaving the Jonote fiber to create the basket.
10. Fireside Flannel Robe by Pact
Price: $64
This is our go-to brand for everything organic cotton. Pact is one of the most affordable sustainable fashion brands, and their new flannel robes look absolutely cozy! We could see some majors snuggles in front of the fire with these.
Plus, everything is made in a Fair Trade Factory!
