The Best Non-Toxic, Sustainable Bed Frames

The bed is the largest piece of furniture most of us have in our bedrooms. Because it is so big, its production uses many resources and can be very unsustainable if we do not thoughtfully choose the materials.

With cheaply made furniture becoming more and more popular, it is all the more important that we buy quality, sustainable pieces for our homes! Not only that, but we also want our beds to be healthy to sleep in.

In this article, we have rounded up 15 sustainable bed frame brands selling gorgeous beds made with eco-friendly and non-toxic materials.

What Makes a Bed Frame Sustainable?

A sustainable bed frame is built to last for decades if not generations. It is usually crafted by hand using traditional craftsman techniques and sustainable practices that do not harm the environment. It is also made with eco-friendly materials and finished using non-toxic, natural finishes.

While not all sustainable bed frames carry third-party certifications, many of them do. Try to look for certifications that guarantee the pieces are free of harmful chemicals such as GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE, CertiPUR-US, or OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Brands certified by GOTS, B Corp, Climate-Neutral, and Fair Trade are other great options!

WHAT ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS SHOULD YOU SEARCH FOR?

Sustainable bed frames are usually crafted from FSC-certified and/or reclaimed wood. The FSC certification ensures the wood is sourced from responsibly managed forests.

You can also buy great eco-friendly pieces made from reclaimed steel, though these are trickier to find.

If you opt for upholstered bed frames, choose ones made with sustainable, natural materials such as linen, organic cotton, sustainably sourced wool, hemp, jute, and responsibly harvested latex.

Our Top Picks for Non-Toxic, Sustainable Bed Frames:

1. Birch

Materials: Wood, Metal, Organic Cotton

The Best SUSTAINABLE And Eco-Friendly PHONE CASES

It is estimated that in 2023, around 1.34 billion smartphones were sold worldwide. A large part of these consumers also probably bought a phone case to protect their precious device from damage.

While it is a great idea to purchase something to make sure our electronics are safe, almost all phone cases we can find on the market are made of plastic. It means that billions of phone cases will stay on the planet for hundreds of years, if not more.

What’s worse, most of them are very poorly made and not built to last, which is not so surprising since we can buy phone cases for as little as a dollar. Poor-quality phone cases will not only become waste fairly quickly, but they are also less likely to protect your device as they should.

For those reasons, we should all invest in a high-quality, sustainable phone case to make sure our phones stay intact and protected from everyday drops and bumps.

If you are looking for a new one, we have selected nine brands that sell well-made, eco-friendly phone cases.

WHAT MAKES A PHONE CASE ECO-FRIENDLY?

A sustainable phone case is always very sturdy, high-quality and made to last. It is usually made using sustainable materials, and it should not be worn down after only a few months of use.

It should also protect your device from drops and bumps because no phone case is eco-friendly if it does not prevent your phone from breaking and becoming e-waste. E-waste is very toxic when discarded inappropriately and causes many environmental issues, so we certainly do not need more of it.

If the company that sells the phone cases is climate-neutral or a certified B Corporation, even better!

WHAT SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS SHOULD YOU SEARCH FOR?

There are many eco-friendly materials that you can choose when looking for a new phone case.

You cannot go wrong with a phone case made from natural materials, like sustainably harvested wood, cork or bamboo. Those are compostable at the end of their life, so they will not stay on the planet forever.

You can also get a phone case made from bioplastic derived from plants, like straw. Or try to get one made from recycled materials. For instance, some parts can be made using recycled silicone or recycled aluminum. And the main body of the phone case will usually be made of recycled plastic.

Brands are now able to create phone cases made with all kinds of recycled plastic, from recycled fishing nets to recycled plastic bottles to recycled TPU. Some brands even sell cases made using old CDs, upcycled skateboards or simply discarded phone cases.

Also, prefer phone cases produced using non-toxic and sustainable glues, lining and adhesives.

10 Eco-Friendly, Non-Toxic Air Fresheners For A Healthy Home (2024)

The Best Sustainable, Non-Toxic Air Fresheners & Fabric Fresheners

Humans have been trying to mask unpleasant odors in their homes for millennia. Ages ago, people used to change the scent in the air by burning incense or using spices, herbs, and floral extracts.

But the invention of modern-day, conventional air fresheners actually dates back to 1948. It suddenly became very easy to get rid of unwanted smells and freshen up our spaces. We simply needed to spray out a fine mist into the air, and we would enjoy the lingering scent for a few hours.

These days, most households still regularly use air and fabric fresheners around their homes as they are extremely convenient to have. Yes, we can open the windows and let fresh air in, but sometimes, we want to add a nice scent to our rooms and closets.

However, the issue is that almost all air and fabric fresheners we can buy at the store are filled with harmful chemicals and toxins that are incredibly unhealthy and unsustainable. But does that mean we need to stop using air fresheners altogether? No, it doesn’t!

In this article, you will learn more about ten brands that make eco-friendly, non-toxic air and fabric fresheners that you can safely use around your family, children and pets. We also included a DIY recipe for people who prefer making their own products!

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM CONVENTIONAL AIR FRESHENERS

Since the home fragrance industry is unregulated and there are no safety standards or ingredient transparency requirements, companies selling air and fabric fresheners fill their products with extremely dangerous chemicals. These are known to trigger allergies and asthma and may cause other health problems.

Toxins in Air Fresheners

More specifically, conventional air fresheners usually contain phthalates, which are linked to hormone disruption and male reproductive system birth defects. Synthetic musks are also common in air fresheners, and they are suspected to cause allergies and hormone disruptions.

Air fresheners are also often made with petroleum distillates, which contribute to water, air and soil pollution, and being exposed to them can lead to respiratory issues, chemical pneumonia and pulmonary damage.

If they are in an aerosol can, air fresheners are filled with aerosol propellants: these can harm the ozone layer, and increase the risk of developing cancer and chronic health issues.

These are only a few harmful ingredients contained in air and fabric fresheners. But so many others are problematic for both human health and the environment!

HOW TO CHOOSE A NON-TOXIC, SUSTAINABLE AIR/FABRIC FRESHENER?

When looking for a non-toxic freshener, always check the ingredient list. If you cannot find one, it may be a warning sign that you should not buy the product!

Sustainable, non-toxic air and fabric fresheners are made using natural ingredients like charcoal, plant oils, mineral- and plant-based ingredients. Also, make sure that the product does not contain harmful ingredients like those mentioned previously.

If you are not sure of your choice, always prefer brands that received trustworthy certifications, like B Corporations. And if you can, pick air fresheners that come in recyclable or compostable packaging. Refill options are great as well!

8. Moso Natural

Moso Natural’s bags are scent-free and filled with only one natural ingredient, which is completely non-toxic and safe to use around children and pets: pure Moso bamboo charcoal. Not only does this ingredient help eliminate odors, but it also dehumidifies the air and removes harmful chemicals and VOCs.

The bags can be used for up to two years, and after that, you can sprinkle the charcoal in your garden to promote plant growth.

Moso Natural also has a scent-free, air purifying spray. Its active probiotic formula quickly destroys any odor, and it is produced without synthetic chemicals.

The brand even has versions specially made for cars, as well as small solid air fresheners in the shape of little paws that you can tuck behind a litter box to eliminate pet odors for seven days.

10. DIY Air & Fabric Freshener

All the brands mentioned in this article sell non-toxic air and fabric fresheners made with natural ingredients. But if you prefer making your own household products to clean and refresh your home instead of buying ready-made ones, this recipe is for you!

First, find an unused spray bottle in your home: the most sustainable option is to reuse one from a product that you have used up. Of course, do not forget to properly clean it so that there is no residue left.

Put one tablespoon of baking soda into a bowl, & add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to it.

I personally love making cleaning products with citrus oils, like lemon, orange or grapefruit essential oils. These always smell so good! I have also made DIY products with Ylang Ylang essential oil, which I highly recommend if you want a more exotic, floral scent.

Then, mix the oil into the baking soda with a fork or a small whisk, and use a funnel to put the mixture into the spray bottle. Finally, pour 2 cups of warm distilled water, and shake the bottle.

And there you have your homemade air and fabric freshener! You can use it to refresh the air in your home or spruce up home textiles and clothes that need a boost before washing them.

This recipe is extremely easy and cheap to make, and all the ingredients are non-toxic. Not to mention you can customize the scent and choose a different one every time you make another homemade freshener!

The Best organic & sustainable bed sheets

Welcome to the world of eco-friendly bedding bliss!

If you're looking to sleep in luxury while also positively impacting the environment, sustainable bed sheets are the way to go. These sheets are not only soft and comfortable, but they are also made from environmentally friendly materials that minimize the use of harmful chemicals and reduce waste. Choosing sustainable bed sheets means you are consciously choosing to protect our planet - and your health!

Sustainable bed sheets are not only better for the environment, but they can also improve your sleep quality. Made from organic cotton, linen or other natural materials, these sheets are grown and produced without the use of harmful pesticides and chemicals. In addition, they are often produced in a way that conserves water and reduces carbon emissions. So, not only are you getting a good night's sleep, but you are also contributing to the well-being of our planet.

This article will explore the benefits of sustainable bed sheets and why they should be your top choice for a restful and eco-friendly sleep experience.

Why Choose Organic and Natural Fabrics for your bed sheets?

Because we spend 1/3 of our lives in our beds! Why wouldn’t we want to make it a safe, non-toxic zone? When we get a little shut-eye, we shouldn’t have to compromise our health (or the planet’s). You don’t want to sleep on toxic dyes or fibers grown with pesticides. These types of fabrics in this post are highly regulated during the entire process from crop to finish, so you can be sure you are sleeping on a safe product.

What types of fabrics should we look for when shopping for new bed sheets?

If you are looking for comfortable and high-quality sheets, you might want to consider sheets made from organic cotton, linen, hemp, or Tencel. Organic cotton is a popular choice for its reliability, while linen sheets offer a beautiful look and feel. Tencel provides a silk-like alternative, and hemp, when blended with organic cotton, can offer a soft and luxurious linen-like experience. Beautiful & Sustainable LINEN Bed SHEETS

Linen, a natural fabric made from the flax plant, has been used by humans for millennia and is considered to be the oldest textile fiber. Evidence shows that it was already present in the country of Georgia as early as 30,000 B.C.!

It was one of the most used textiles to make clothes up until the Industrial Revolution. And despite the invention of synthetic fibers and their popularity, linen has remained in demand to this day.

The fabric is elegant, highly breathable, and has great thermo-regulating properties, making it the ideal material for bedding and sheets. It keeps us cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. It is also very durable and one of the most sustainable fabrics out there.

Sink into the soothing comfort of linen sheets thanks to these 14 eco-friendly brands! Rest assured, their linen sheets will keep you cool throughout the night while being healthy and sustainable for you and the planet!

WHAT MAKES LINEN SO SUSTAINABLE?

The flax plant grows easily without using a lot of pesticides and is not nearly as water-intensive as cotton. For instance, we only need 6.4 liters of water to make a linen shirt compared to 2,700 liters for a cotton shirt!

Flax is also grown as a rotation crop, which helps reduce soil erosion. Plus, by-products (like oils) are made with the remaining parts of the flax plant, so nothing is wasted.

Linen is also incredibly durable and long-lasting, and it is 100% biodegradable at the end of its life.

WHAT TYPES OF LINEN SHOULD YOU SEARCH FOR?

Linen is very sustainable, but some types are better than others.

The best option is to find GOTS-certified organic linen sheets (though these are harder to find), as the certification would guarantee they were produced ethically and sustainably.

Try to find linen certified by OEKO-TEX or MADE-SAFE to ensure it is free of harmful chemicals and healthy to use. Also, make sure the fabric is either undyed or colored with non-toxic, eco-friendly dyes.

Finally, buy from brands that are transparent about their supply chain. Even better if they are Fair Trade or B Corp certified!
