The Best Non-Toxic & Sustainable Rug Brands

There is something special about a rug that brings a room together. The intricate patterns and textures of the rugs in your home can inspire the overall design of each room and become the central element that ties everything together.

At Sustainably Chic, we are mindful of the environmental impact of our purchases, so we prioritize rugs made of sustainably-sourced natural materials like handwoven jute and organic cotton. We also appreciate the charm of second-hand and vintage rugs, each with its own unique story and character.

In addition to aesthetics, practicality is important to us. We prioritize easy maintenance, especially in high-traffic areas, and we prefer washable rugs to ensure that your living spaces remain inviting and conducive to both work and play without compromising the beauty of your rugs.

What makes a rug sustainable?

Sustainable rugs are meticulously crafted using eco-friendly and non-toxic materials and production methods to minimize the negative impact on the environment. These rugs are often handwoven or machine-woven from organic or recycled fibers, such as jute, seagrass, bamboo, hemp, or even yarn made from recycled plastic bottles. By utilizing these materials, sustainable rug manufacturers significantly reduce the reliance on non-renewable resources and decrease the amount of waste generated during the production process.

Moreover, sustainable rug manufacturers prioritize ethical labor practices, ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and supporting local communities where the rugs are made. This commitment to ethical sourcing and production processes reflects a dedication to both environmental and social responsibility. Furthermore, they are free from harmful chemicals and toxins commonly found in non-sustainable rugs, contributing to a cleaner and safer indoor environment.

What's more, sustainable rugs are renowned for their durability and longevity. Their high-quality construction allows them to withstand heavy foot traffic and retain their beauty for years to come, making them a worthwhile investment for any space. Whether you're looking for a stylish area rug or a durable runner for a high-traffic area, sustainable rugs offer both elegance and practicality.

Why Purchase From a Sustainable Rug Brand?

When you make a purchase of a rug from any of the brands mentioned below, you are contributing to the creation of safer working conditions for the individuals involved in the production process. Additionally, the materials used in these rugs are not only better for the environment but also for your own health.

By selecting a rug from these brands, you are ensuring that you are investing in a higher quality product that is designed to last for many years in your home. In an industry fraught with excessive waste and unethical treatment of workers, it is more crucial than ever to throw your support behind brands that consistently prioritize the well-being of the planet and its people.

How To CAre For Your Rugs

Caring for sustainable rugs is quite simple. Here are some tips to help your rug maintain its best appearance:

  1. Vacuum Regularly: Regular vacuuming is important to remove dirt, dust, and debris. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to gently clean the rug's surface. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure, especially if you have a delicate natural fiber rug.

  2. Rotate Your Rug: To prevent uneven wear, rotate your rug every few months to ensure it receives equal foot traffic and maintains its appearance.

  3. Spot Clean Spills Immediately: If a spill happens, it's important to act fast to prevent stains from setting. Use a clean cloth to blot the spill and soak up as much liquid as possible. Avoid rubbing the stain, as this could cause it to set deeper into the fibers. You can use a non-toxic detergent or a mixture of water & vinegar to clean the affected area, following the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. Professional Cleaning: Depending on the type of rug, it may be necessary to have it professionally cleaned every few years. It is important to refer to the manufacturer's recommendations or seek advice from a professional rug cleaner to determine the best cleaning method for your specific rug.

  5. Protect from Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause colors to fade and weaken the fibers of your rug. Consider rotating the rug periodically to minimize sun exposure.

By following these care tips, you can extend the lifespan of your rug and maintain its beauty for years to come.

14 Non-Toxic & Organic Pillow Brands For A Sustainable Night’s Sleep (2024)

the best NON-TOXIC & Organic PILLOWS

For many years, sleep was not my priority. As a young adult, I thought that neglecting my sleep wouldn’t do much harm. I know that so many people are guilty of this, but this isn’t a healthy way to live. A good night’s sleep is crucial for our well-being, health, and ability to concentrate. We not only should get at least seven hours of shut-eye per night, but we also need to make sure that we are sleeping well.

One of the best ways to improve our sleep quality is by investing in comfortable pillows. However, most pillows contain hazardous chemicals and toxins that we are exposed to all night long.

These conventional pillows are not only unhealthy, but they’re also not sustainably made. The key to avoiding them is to buy your sleep pillows from brands that care about your health and the planet.

Here is a compilation of 14 brands that make sustainable, non-toxic pillows!

WHAT MAKES PILLOWS SUSTAINABLE & NON-TOXIC?

Sustainable and non-toxic pillows are made from eco-friendly materials, without using any harsh chemicals and treatments.

An easy way to know if you’re investing in a healthy pillow is to check if it has been certified non-toxic by MADE SAFE, or if the brand received the Greenguard Gold certification. Both are proof that you will not be exposed to unsafe chemicals while sleeping.

Do not forget to make sure that the pillow you are purchasing is of good quality. It needs to be comfortable, provide proper support, and keep its shape with time.

Sustainable pillows are also made by transparent companies that pay their workers well, and that often give back to non-profit organizations.

WHAT ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS SHOULD YOU SEARCH FOR?

When looking for a non-toxic pillow, always choose one made from natural materials. Here are some materials you can find in sustainable pillows:

  • GOTS-certified organic cotton

  • GOLS-certified organic latex

  • Buckwheat hulls

  • Eucalyptus or kapok tree fiber

  • Sugarcane fiber

  • Woolmark-certified wool

  • Responsible Down Standard certified down

These materials are even more sustainable if they’re organic and certified by Oeko-Tex or CertiPur-US. They’re all sustainable, but each one has a different feel. So choose your favorite depending on your preferences!

It was one of the most used textiles to make clothes up until the Industrial Revolution. And despite the invention of synthetic fibers and their popularity, linen has remained in demand to this day.

The fabric is elegant, highly breathable, and has great thermo-regulating properties, making it the ideal material for bedding and sheets. It keeps us cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. It is also very durable and one of the most sustainable fabrics out there.

Sink into the soothing comfort of linen sheets thanks to these 14 eco-friendly brands! Rest assured, their linen sheets will keep you cool throughout the night while being healthy and sustainable for you and the planet!

WHAT MAKES LINEN SO SUSTAINABLE?

The flax plant grows easily without using a lot of pesticides and is not nearly as water-intensive as cotton. For instance, we only need 6.4 liters of water to make a linen shirt compared to 2,700 liters for a cotton shirt!

Flax is also grown as a rotation crop, which helps reduce soil erosion. Plus, by-products (like oils) are made with the remaining parts of the flax plant, so nothing is wasted.

Linen is also incredibly durable and long-lasting, and it is 100% biodegradable at the end of its life.

WHAT TYPES OF LINEN SHOULD YOU SEARCH FOR?

Linen is very sustainable, but some types are better than others.

The best option is to find GOTS-certified organic linen sheets (though these are harder to find), as the certification would guarantee they were produced ethically and sustainably.

Try to find linen certified by OEKO-TEX or MADE-SAFE to ensure it is free of harmful chemicals and healthy to use. Also, make sure the fabric is either undyed or colored with non-toxic, eco-friendly dyes.

Finally, buy from brands that are transparent about their supply chain. Even better if they are Fair Trade or B Corp certified!

the best eco-friendly laptop Bags, Sleeves & cases

Costing up to a few thousand dollars, laptops are expensive and valuable electronics that have become, over the past two decades, an essential tool in most people’s lives. However, producing electronics is a very unsustainable and unethical activity.

For instance, we need to mine rare minerals which are non-renewable resources. Mining is extremely damaging to the environment, not to mention the miners who work in very unhealthy and unsafe conditions.

The manufacturing process also relies on huge amounts of energy and water, and it has a massive carbon footprint. And at the end of their lives, electronics become e-waste which causes many other environmental issues.

Of course, we cannot completely stop using electronics as they play such a big role in today’s society. But what we can do is prolong their lives for as long as possible.

That is why we need to protect our precious laptops from spills, drops, scratches, and bumps. A high-quality laptop sleeve is a must-have, whether you need to take your laptop with you on your faraway adventures, on your commute to work, or on your next trip to the coffee shop.

We have selected ten brands that sell sustainable laptop sleeves to keep your laptop safe from the hustle and bustle of your daily life!

WHAT MAKES A LAPTOP SLEEVE SUSTAINABLE?

A laptop sleeve is eco-friendly when it is made with high-quality, sustainable materials in an ethical way. The workers who make it should be paid a fair wage and work in safe working conditions. The laptop sleeve should be built to last for many years without getting worn down.

A sustainable laptop sleeve should also protect your laptop efficiently. As we mentioned, electronics are damaging to the environment, so the sleeve needs to keep your laptop safe so that it can function well for many years to come.

WHAT ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS SHOULD YOU SEARCH FOR?

Sustainable laptop sleeves can be made from a variety of eco-friendly materials. If you can find a sleeve made of organic cottonhemp or linen, that is amazing! But you could also choose one made using upcycled fabrics, or recycled materials like recycled polyester and recycled cotton.

Some laptop sleeves are made of leather, which is a durable material. But try to choose leather sourced from a tannery that was Gold-rated by the Leather Working Group, and that is tanned naturally using vegetable tannins.

Laptop sleeves made from apple leather, or any other type of vegan leather made using discarded fruits, are another eco-friendly option!
