ECO-FRIENDLY & Sustainable RAIN BOOTS

If you live in a place where it’s raining frequently, rain boots are an essential shoe to have in your closet. It is very uncomfortable and irritating to have wet feet, and you put yourself at risk of getting sick or developing blisters.

That’s why you might want to consider getting a good pair of rain boots for those rainy days to make sure your feet are dry, warm and protected.

However, the main issue with rain boots is that it is complicated to find a pair that is sustainably and ethically made. Most rain boots on the market are made of PVC and other plastic components.

PVC contains many chemicals that are toxic to both the environment and human health. They’re even more dangerous to children, so buying them a pair of PVC rain boots is a no-no!

But when rain boots are a necessity for everyday life, you still need to buy them. Fortunately, you can choose healthier and more sustainable alternatives.

We’ve compiled a list of 7 brands that sell sustainable rain boots so that you can keep your feet dry and protected in all weathers.

WHAT MAKES RAIN BOOTS ECO-FRIENDLY?

It is complicated to find an eco-friendly pair of rain boots, but those made using natural materials are your best options, especially those made from renewable resources.

Sustainable rain boots will always be well-built and high-quality. You buy rain boots because you want waterproof shoes that will not leak in the rain. They shouldn’t develop holes after only a few seasons. So investing in quality boots is essential so that you’ll be able to wear them for years to come.

Also, rain boots should not be made at the expense of workers. The brand needs to offer them safe and decent working conditions, and pay them a fair wage. Its supply chain should be as transparent and traceable as possible.

WHAT ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS SHOULD YOU SEARCH FOR?

If you want sustainable rain boots, avoid synthetic materials and choose natural ones instead.

The most frequent material you will find in eco-friendly rain boots is natural rubber. Natural rubber is a renewable material that is usually tapped from hevea trees.

It’s also important to make sure the rubber is sustainably sourced, and that its production doesn’t contribute to mass deforestation. To do so, look for rubber boots with the Forest Stewardship Council certification

The FSC is an organization that promotes responsible management of forests, audits plantations, and certifies those that protect natural resources, biodiversity and human rights.

Choosing rubber products that are certified by the Fair Rubber Association is another way to make sure the rubber is sustainably sourced, following fair trade principles.

You could also buy rain boots made from waterproof leather, as it’s a very durable material. But preferably, choose leather that is vegetable-tanned and produced in tanneries that are Gold-rated by the Leather Working Group.

The Best Organic Cotton Pajamas

We all spend (hopefully) eight hours a day sleeping in our beds, so being mindful of what we wear when we sleep can benefit our well-being, as investing in pajamas means investing in the quality of your sleep.

What factors should we consider next time we purchase new PJs?

Comfort, wearability, quality, and, of course, sustainability. In terms of materials, organic cotton is better than conventional cotton for the environment and your skin.

What is Organic Cotton?

Organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides. Organic cotton crops can be sprayed with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) natural proteins to protect them from insect infestation and crop destruction, but not with the cocktail of toxic chemicals often sprayed over conventional cotton crops. While organic cotton, by definition, is about the use of synthetic chemicals, organic cotton often is significantly less water-intensive than conventional.

Read more about organic cotton here.

What is GOTS Cotton?

Many of these brands use certified cotton from the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS), the golden seal of approval for sustainably processed fabric made with organic fibers.

Read more about GOTS cotton here.

Why should you purchase organic cotton pajamas?

Organic cotton pajamas are not only more eco-friendly but also more comfortable. The natural fibers of organic cotton enable greater ventilation and temperature management as you sleep. This characteristic guarantees your year-round comfort by keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Wearability is essential for pajamas and clothing, and organic cotton pieces tend to be made with durability and longevity in mind. The quality construction of these garments ensures that they can withstand regular wear and washing without losing shape or tearing.

Here, we list a selection of brands that offer organic cotton PJs that fit different needs and budgets. Happy browsing!

SNL's Latest Skit Shines a Light on Fast Fashion Giants Temu and Shein & We Are Here For It!

SNL Fast Fashion Ad Skit

This was too good not to share! SNL has made us laugh (slightly cringe because it’s true) once again with their ‘Xiemu’ Ad exposing the dark side of fast fashion. From exploitation of workers to hazardous products, Temu & Shein are making disposable fashion cheaper and scarier than ever.

What is Fast Fashion?

Fast fashion refers to brands that produce high volumes of clothing throughout the year. These brands now make clothes at a fraction of the price they used to, enabling consumers to update their wardrobes quickly and affordably.

But this over-consumption of cheaply-made clothes is leading to the huge growth of textile waste, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. It is raising social issues that we can no longer ignore, such as human rights violations.

The best thing we can do, as consumers, is to stop supporting this industry. We should avoid fast fashion brands and start supporting sustainable clothing brands instead (& shopping secondhand and loving what we already have!).

HOW TO RECOGNIZE A FAST FASHION BRAND?

Temu and Shein are not the only culprits. In truth, most clothing brands today are part of the fast fashion problem. A majority of fast fashion brands release new clothing collections every week and use marketing techniques to encourage consumers to buy into new trends. These companies are often vague and not entirely transparent about their suppliers and production processes. They do not provide specific information about their efforts to mitigate their environmental impact.

Additionally, they do not offer evidence that they provide their workers with decent and safe working conditions, as well as living wages.

Many fast fashion brands are greenwashing. They are disclosing misleading information to fool customers into thinking they’re an ethical and sustainable company.

Cheap prices are also a great indicator of fast fashion products and their poor quality. It’s nearly impossible to produce a $5 t-shirt, pay garment workers fairly, and have manufacturing processes that do not harm the environment.

The Best Size Inclusive Swimwear brands that are also Sustainable!

With summer right around the corner, you may be looking for a new sustainable swimsuit. Swimsuits should make us feel confident and comfortable. They should be made to fit our bodies - not the other way around. Unfortunately, many sustainable swimwear companies don’t offer inclusive sizing. This makes it incredibly difficult for women of all shapes and sizes to shop sustainably. That’s why we’re here to help. Below, we’ve put together seven fantastic, size inclusive swimwear brands you’ll love.

What Makes Swimwear Size Inclusive?

Size inclusive swimwear is simply swimwear that goes beyond straight sizes. This means the swimsuit is offered in sizes above XL or a women’s size 14/16.

If a swimwear brand is size inclusive, they aren’t making a separate “plus-size” line. They simply offer all of their products in a wider range of sizes. This ensures that most bodies have access to the same styles, fits, and coverage - no matter their size.

All of the brands included in this article are size inclusive. We’ve also chosen brands that offer a range of price points to ensure that there are accessible options available.

What Should You Look For In Sustainable Swimwear?

When it comes to figuring out if a swimwear company is indeed sustainable, there are a few things you should look out for. Sustainable brands will use ethical labor, sustainable production methods, and eco-friendly materials.

So what exactly makes a fabric sustainable? Sustainable swimwear can be made from a variety of eco-friendly fabrics, but they are typically made using recycled materials. Most sustainable swimwear will still have a small percentage of virgin synthetic fibers. The majority of materials used, however, should be from recycled, regenerated, or natural sources. Sustainable companies should note what fabrics and fibers they use.

The most commonly used materials in sustainable swimwear are:

Ultimate Guide to Sustainable Denim Jackets

Are you a fashion enthusiast who also cares about the planet? The fashion industry is one of the most significant contributors to pollution and waste, so it's time to change and embrace sustainable fashion! These sustainable jean jackets are stylish and made with ethical and eco-friendly practices. From recycled materials to organic cotton, these denim jackets are created with the planet in mind. Whether you prefer a classic blue jean jacket or want to experiment with something a little more edgy, there's a sustainable option for everyone. Not only will you be positively impacting the environment, but you'll also be supporting brands that prioritize sustainability. By opting for a sustainable denim jacket, you choose quality over quantity and invest in a wardrobe staple that will last for years!

The Environmental Impact of Traditional Denim Jackets

Traditional denim jackets may be iconic and stylish but have a high environmental cost. The production process of conventional denim involves using harmful chemicals, excessive water consumption, and significant carbon emissions. Additionally, the fast fashion industry's focus on cheap and disposable clothing means that denim jackets are often discarded after a few wears, contributing to the growing problem of textile waste.

The production of traditional denim also contributes to water pollution. The dyeing and finishing processes involve toxic chemicals that end up in rivers and other water bodies, affecting aquatic life and ecosystems. Furthermore, the cultivation of conventional cotton, the most common material used in denim, requires large amounts of water and pesticides, further adding to the environmental impact.

What is a Sustainable Denim Jacket?

A sustainable denim jacket is one that you can wear for many, many years, made ethically with eco-friendly materials. We look for many things when deciding if a brand should be featured here on Sustainably Chic, but the material, quality, and manufacturing are some of the most important features.

Click here to read more about sustainable fashion.

We also believe that one of the most sustainable denim jackets is the one you already have in your closet :)

Benefits of Sustainable Denim Jackets

Sustainable denim jackets offer a solution to the environmental issues caused by traditional denim production. These jackets are made with ethical and eco-friendly practices, reducing their environmental impact and providing fair wages for their makers. By choosing a sustainable denim jacket, you're not only making a fashion statement but also taking a stand against the harmful practices of the fashion industry.

Most sustainable denim jackets are made with organic cotton. Unlike conventional cotton, organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers, reducing the impact on soil health, water quality, and biodiversity. Read more about organic cotton & its benefits here. Many sustainable brands also repurpose old denim or other fabrics to create new jackets, reducing the demand for virgin resources and diverting textile waste from landfills. By giving new life to old garments, these jackets contribute to a circular economy, where resources are used more efficiently and waste is minimized. If you want to learn more about circular fashion and why it’s essential for sustainable fashion brands to adopt, read this.

We also always suggest searching through your favorite vintage and secondhand shops to find denim jackets, too!

Denim has been known to dirty waterways in the towns where it is produced. ABLE makes sure to clean all the water used in the production process in its wastewater treatment plant. We love that ABLE is one of the most transparent, sustainable fashion brands, with accessible pricing and more inclusive sizing!

2. Warp + Weft

Price: $44-98

If you are looking for sustainable denim jackets for men and women at an affordable price, Warp + Weft is the place! Their family-run eco-friendly mill is one of the world's largest textile manufacturers, which means they can create high-quality denim that's good for you, the planet, and your wallet. They have many styles, including denim shirt jackets, denim vests, and a few pops of color. Through their partnership with Recover™, Warp + Weft's recycling facility transforms post-industrial and post-consumer waste into recycled fiber that can be woven into new yarn - for future denim styles. This is an excellent example of circular fashion

3. Outerknown

Price: $268

Pro surfer Kelly Slater is behind this Fair Labor Association-accredited brand, which makes garments that, 90% of the time, are made of recycled, organic, and 'regenerative' materials. Outerknown has two denim jackets - their unisex Tides Trucker Jean Jacket, made from 100% organic cotton, and the men's Blanket Trucker, made from organic cotton & recycled cotton. Plus, the company works with three partners who are certified through Fair Trade USA. Want something a little lighter than a denim jacket? Check out the women's Canyon Jean Shacket with its timeless oversized fit with button-down cuffs.

4. Outland Denim

Price: $182-359

This ethical brand uses traceable, sustainable organic cotton to create timeless denim jackets. Outland is dedicated to abolishing slavery, with freedom and liberty being core to the brand and its values. The brand makes its clothing in Cambodia, where unjust practices are rife in the textile industry. In opposition to this, the brand pays fair living wages and offers a safe, comfortable alternative for working women – often those previously working in dangerous sweatshop conditions. Outland Denim labels include messages from the seamstresses who make the garments, making your purchase all the more special.

5. Whimsy + Row

Price: $176

Whimsy + Row produces limited batches that are all handcrafted in Los Angeles. The brand only uses locally sourced and eco-friendly materials and recycles every scrap of deadstock fabric to turn it into new garments or accessories.  Their only denim jacket features a chunky organic corozo button closure, two overlapping pockets on the right, and a single pocket on the left. It is made from 100% organic cotton and comes in classic dark blue and vintage black. Whimsy + Row is also carbon-neutral, and its pieces are made using recycled water and low-impact dyes.

6. Kings of Indigo

Price: €180,00

A denim jacket made with one of our favorite blends - organic cotton and Tencel! The Ota jacket is workwear-inspired, with a hidden button placket and buttons at the sleeve opening. Many Kings of Indigo’s Tencel garments are 100% Tencel or blended with other compostable fabrics, ensuring that biodegradability and sustainability remain intact. Adding Tencel to cotton provides a softer touch & breathability, which makes for a great everyday season-to-season jacket. The brand also publishes information about where their fabrics are milled and where their garments are made - a win for transparency!

7. ArmedAngels

Price: €58.74 - €125.97

This brand is all about detoxing the denim we wear. DetoxDenim means eradicating unnecessary chemicals & bleaching without toxic chlorine. ArmedAngels uses a lot of recycled cotton blended with organic cotton. They are also a very circular fashion brand in that customers can return their old Armed Angels t-shirt or denim via the ‘take-back system’ and they will be turned into new items. They even have a secondhand reselling platform, and they founded a non-profit that supports farmers in their transition to organic farming. This is just another excellent example of how a sustainable fashion brand can become circular!

Sustainable Denim Jacket Care and Maintenance

To ensure that your sustainable denim jacket lasts for years to come, proper care is essential. Here are some tips to keep your jacket looking its best:

  1. Wash Less: Denim jackets don't need to be washed as frequently as other garments. Spot clean any stains and only wash when necessary to conserve water and energy.

  2. Cold Water and Gentle Cycle: When washing your denim jacket, use cold water and choose the gentle cycle. This helps preserve the color and shape of the jacket.

  3. Air Dry: Instead of using a dryer, air dry your denim jacket to save energy and prevent shrinkage or damage. Hang it in a well-ventilated area or lay it flat to dry.

  4. Avoid Ironing: Denim jackets often look best with a slightly worn-in appearance, so avoid ironing unless absolutely necessary. If needed, use a steamer or a low-heat iron.

  5. Store Properly: When not in use, store your denim jacket in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This helps maintain its color and prevents unnecessary wear.

By following these care and maintenance tips, you can extend the life of your sustainable denim jacket and reduce the need for frequent replacements.
