What Makes a Robe Sustainable?
A sustainable robe is about more than simply choosing a natural fabric. We look at the materials, dyes and finishes, certifications, manufacturing practices and overall quality of the garment. After all, even a 100% cotton robe can have a complicated story behind it.
Here are a few things we recommend looking for when shopping for a more sustainable robe:
Natural & Organic Materials
We typically prefer robes made from natural fibers like organic cotton, linen and lyocell. These materials are breathable, comfortable against the skin and don’t rely on fossil-fuel-based fibers like polyester. When choosing cotton, look for organic cotton whenever possible. Conventional cotton can require significant pesticide and chemical inputs, while certified organic cotton is grown according to standards that restrict many synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. That said, a natural fiber isn’t automatically sustainable. How that fiber was grown, processed, dyed and turned into fabric matters, too.
Certifications
Third-party certifications can give us a little more information about what happened before a robe reached our closet. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is one of our favorites for organic textiles because it goes beyond simply verifying organic fiber content and includes requirements for textile processing as well as environmental and social criteria.
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 focuses on testing finished textile products for a long list of specified harmful substances. However, it’s important to remember that OEKO-TEX® certification does not mean a fabric is organic or natural. Depending on the product and brand, you may also come across certifications such as MADE SAFE or Fair Trade, which can provide additional information about chemical safety or working conditions.
Certifications aren’t the only way to identify a better robe, but they can provide helpful third-party verification rather than relying solely on a brand’s own sustainability claims.
Dyes & Finishes
This is something I think we should be talking about much more when discussing sustainable and non-toxic clothing. Fiber content only tells us part of the story.
A label might say a robe is made from 100% organic cotton, but it usually won’t tell you which dyes, treatments or finishing chemicals were used on the fabric. Textiles can go through numerous processing steps before becoming the finished garment we wear. That’s why I like seeing brands provide information about their dyes, finishes and chemical standards; or use credible certifications that address certain substances used during textile production. When a brand simply says something is “natural” or “non-toxic,” look for information explaining why.
Ethical Manufacturing
Where a robe is made can provide some context, but a “Made in” label doesn’t tell us the entire supply chain. The cotton could be grown in one country, spun into yarn in another, dyed somewhere else and finally cut and sewn in the country listed on the tag.
Instead of judging a garment solely by its country of origin, we look for brands that are transparent about their factories and suppliers. Ideally, brands should provide information about worker protections, wages, working conditions, audits and where different stages of production take place. The more a brand is willing to tell us about who made our clothing and under what conditions, the better.
Durability
Finally, don’t overlook quality. A robe you’ll wear for five or ten years is generally a better investment than an inexpensive robe that pills, sheds or falls apart after a season. Look for substantial fabrics, strong stitching and construction designed to withstand regular washing and wear.
Ultimately, the most sustainable robe isn’t necessarily the one with the longest list of sustainability claims. It’s one that’s thoughtfully made, safe and comfortable to wear, and durable enough that you won’t need to replace it anytime soon.
